Online survey closes Wednesday, November 15, following 60+ public engagement events to gather information from residents across the state
DETROIT—Michigan’s Chief Growth Officer Hilary Doe announced a push today for more Michiganders to provide input as to what would make Michigan an even better place to call home. Residents are invited to provide feedback by completing an online survey. Feedback collected will help inform the state’s population growth strategy. “We are committed to listening to our state’s residents about their hopes and dreams for Michigan. Their voices are the compass guiding us toward a future that is diverse, vibrant and rooted in honest feedback,” said Chief Growth Officer Hilary Doe. “There is no one-size-fits-all solution to growing the population. Findings from the survey have demonstrated this and shined a light on challenges our communities are facing, but also what they love most about calling Michigan home. Leveraging this critical information will allow us to grow a better and bolder Michigan that reflects the aspirations of our diverse communities.”
Over 800 Michiganders have taken the survey since the listening tour launched in August. The tour has been traveling to every corner of the state to engage with residents of all ages and backgrounds. To date, 64 public engagement events have been completed, which includes visiting eight colleges and universities, presenting information about the mission to grow the state’s population at over 20 conferences and engaging with nearly 3,000 Michiganders at in-person events.
Michiganders have expressed their love for the state’s natural beauty and outdoor recreation options in the feedback collected so far. Input provided also indicates that economic incentives, quality education, specific employment training and diverse job opportunities are critical factors to attraction and retention. Housing, progress on roads, transit and multimodal transportation in cities are also considerations when deciding where to call home.
In addition to informing the state’s overall growth strategy led by Doe, survey findings are also shared with the Growing Michigan Together Council as they prepare to submit final growth-oriented policy recommendations to the governor in December. Governor Whitmer established the bipartisan Council in June 2023 to generate ideas that attract talent, improve education, modernize infrastructure and continue Michigan’s economic momentum.
